Entered the Royal Navy in 1856, and was appointed acting-Mate
of HMS Sanspareil, a schooner of 70 guns, commanded by Captain Astley
Cooper Key, with whom he joined in hostilities on the coast of China.
From 16 Jan 1858, he was attached to H.M.S. Esk, another schooner of
21 guns, under the command of Captain Sir Robert McClure.
His gallant conduct at the capture of Canton was rewarded by the Admiralty
by his prompt promotion to the rank of acting - Lieutenant, on 16 Dec
1857, subject to his passing at the Royal Naval College, and this promotion
was confirmed on 16 Mar 1858.
He then served in that rank in HMS Queen, 74 guns in the Mediterranean.
He was gazetted Commander on 4 Aug 1868 and on attaining his seniority
he retired with the rank of Captain on 4 Aug 1883.
