Biography

Educated at Elizabeth College 1837-41 - College No. 561;
Civil Engineer, M.I.C.E. and F.R.G.S.;
Apprenticed to the Chief Engineer of Dublin and Galway Railway 1846;
Resident Engineer, Cavan Branch 1852;
Appointed to the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway, 1853;
Surveyed 500 miles of the line;
Started the Railway Line at Surat 1855;
Was enrolled there as a volunteer during the Indian Mutiny;
In 1858 was selected to survey a railway from Smyrna, to connect the
Euphrates Valley Railway from Constantinople to the Persian Gulf;
Returned to India 1859, and was employed on the Oudh Railway Survey;
Joined the East Indian Railway Company in 1860;
On survey and construction 1860-7;
In 1868 joined the Government Railway, to Khamgaon, in 1870;
Also made the Patree Railway;
In 1872 was appointed Chief Engineer to the Maharajah Holkar;
Retired in 1881, but in 1882 accepted an appointment on the B.B. and
C.I. Railway and was engaged on survey and construction;
Finally retired from India in 1884;
Appointed in 1885 Government Inspector for Railway Material for India;
Retired to Guernsey in 1888, where he died in 1917.
