His wife Charlotte Twopeny died two months after the birth of his son, Horace,
and he moved the business to Paris
retired to Versailles, where he died in 1898 and was buried.

A Mural Tablet to his memory is on the South Nave Aisle at the Town Church, St Peter Port, Guernsey.
