He was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant to the Royal Fusiliers,

In the South African War, 1899-1902, he took part in the operations
for the relief of Ladysmith, including the actions at Colenso
and the Tugela Heights.
From July 1903 till Oct. 1910 he was employed
with the Egyptian Army
In Mar. 1912 he was appointed A.D.C. to the G.O.C. Southern Command.
He was 'reported wounded and missing, now believed killed,' in
Casualty Reports of 20 Oct. 1914.
Mentioned in dispatches - Oct. 1914.
