Educated at a Preparatory School at Guildford; at 'Brackenbury's', Woolwich and at R.M.A. 1874-6; failed at passing out; joined Lanarkshire Militia for two years; passed into Indian Woods and Forests, studied forestry at Nancy, France, but resigned and went to Australia 1879-91; thence to California 1892, where he died in Los Angeles in 1928.
