| Both Thomas and his wife, Elizabeth had been on a visit to Guernsey, to introduce her to her new relations following their marriage five months earlier. On their return to England the vessel in which they were travelling was overturned in a squall near Portland. They were both drowned as well as several others of the passengers; amongst those drowned was Matthew Saumarez, the father of the first Lord de Sausmarez. |
